Selecting the pair might seem to the most important part of the breeding process, but knowing the right way to breed them is equally important. This article provides you with a simple step by step process of how to breed Betta fishes.

  • Step 1 – Picking the Tank

    Choose a 10 Gallon tank from a near by pet store.

  • Step 2 – Preparing the tank

    Fill it with chlorine free water. Add water conditioners that will promote spawning and to make the water more suitable for your fishes. Add methylene blue to change colour of water and also add water conditioner to keep away fungus and pesticides. This will aid the Bettas in building better bubble nests. Drop a dried Almond leaf.

  • Step 3 – Conditioning the tank

    Set aside this setup for a day or two. The color of the water will turn into brown or green due to reaction of tannis from the leaf with methylene blue in the water.

  • Step 4 – Placing the chimney style bottle

    Place a transparent chimney style bottle or a cut plastic bottle inside the tank.

  • Step 5 – Setup the anchorage for Bubblenest

    Remove the old Indian Almond leaf and place a new smaller dried leaf and this will serve as the anchorage of the bubblenest.

  • Step 6 – Introduce the parents

    Now introduce the male betta fish followed by the female. Place the female betta fish inside the chimney style bottle and the male outside.

  • Step 7 – Leave them to bond

    Set this aside for a day. After 24 hours you will be able to see that the male has already made its bubblenest.

  • Step 8 – Breeding Process

    Now remove the chimney styled bottle and allow the Betta pair to start the breeding process.

  • Step 9 – Laying Eggs

    Once the female has laid the eggs the male will start guarding the eggs that are attached to the bubblenest. Now shift the female Betta to another tank

  • Step 10 – Eggs Hatching

    Once the eggs start to hatch and the younger ones swim on their own, remove the male Betta fish out of the breeding tank.
